Project Case | Lighting Up the Silk Road: Professional LED Sports Lighting for the Taekwondo Competition at the 15th Xinjiang Games
Supporting Elite Competition with Professional Sports Lighting
Project Background
In 2026, the 15th Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Games and the 11th Traditional Ethnic Sports Games were held across Xinjiang, bringing together athletes from across the region for a wide range of competitive events.
As one of the key competition cities, Kuytun hosted seven major sports, including shooting, martial arts routines, Sanda, taekwondo, beach volleyball, volleyball, and athletics. Some of these competitions required lighting systems capable of meeting the demanding requirements of HD television broadcasting and national and international-level competition.
As a host venue for the volleyball and taekwondo events, Huaxiyuan Sports Activity Center in Kuytun faced the challenge of providing a high-quality lighting environment suitable for elite competition and professional TV coverage.
Guangdong Seven Continents Industrial Co., Ltd. (SCL Sports Lighting), one of the drafting organizations for China's national standard Technical Requirements for LED Sports Lighting Applications, was selected to provide the professional LED sports lighting solution. With extensive experience in major sporting events, SCL sports lighting has provided professional sports lighting solutions for events and venues associated with the Olympic Games, Asian Games, FISU World University Games, CBA and Chinese Super League, among others.
01 | Project Overview & Design Objectives
Huaxiyuan Sports Activity Center includes two indoor volleyball courts and was selected to host the volleyball competition of the 15th Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Games, as well as the “Dong'e Ejiao Cup” Taekwondo Competition.
Before the competition, the Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture Women's Volleyball Team moved into the venue for intensive training and preparation. This placed higher demands on the venue's lighting environment, which needed to be upgraded before the competitions to meet the requirements of high-definition television broadcasting.
The existing lighting system had significant limitations in terms of illuminance, uniformity, color rendering and glare control. Conventional fixtures also offered relatively low optical efficiency and poor control of light distribution, resulting in excessive light spill.
These issues could affect athletes' ability to accurately track the ball and judge its trajectory, while also making it difficult for high-speed broadcast cameras to capture clear and consistent images.
To address these challenges, the SCL design team developed a customized professional LED sports lighting solution based on relevant FIVB requirements and national sports venue lighting standards, providing an optimized lighting environment for both volleyball and taekwondo competitions.
02 | Professional LED Lighting Solution
Taekwondo & Volleyball Competition Hall
SCL installed professional LED sports lighting fixtures specifically designed for competitive sports venues. The system incorporates precision anti-glare optics and professionally engineered lenses developed in collaboration with a German laboratory.
The optical system achieves a light transmittance of ≥98%, while fixture utilization efficiency exceeds 95%, helping direct light accurately toward the playing area rather than into unwanted zones.
Through precise optical distribution and carefully optimized fixture positioning, the system provides the lighting performance required for both volleyball and taekwondo competitions, while supporting the demanding visual requirements of TV broadcasting.
Key Performance Highlights
TV Broadcast-Ready Illuminance
Horizontal and vertical illuminance were designed to meet the requirements for professional sports competition and HD television broadcasting, providing cameras with a stable and clear visual environment.
Optimized Lighting Uniformity
Illuminance uniformity, including U1 and U2, was optimized to minimize bright and dark areas across the playing field and provide a more consistent visual environment for athletes and broadcasters.
High Color Rendering
With a CRI (Ra) above 90, the lighting system delivers accurate and natural color reproduction, helping cameras capture the true colors of athletes' uniforms, court markings and skin tones.
Advanced Glare Control
Precision optical distribution minimizes unwanted glare and light spill. The system keeps the Glare Rating (GR) within the required range, helping athletes maintain clear vision during high-speed competition while improving the viewing experience for spectators and broadcasters.
03 | Project Value & Industry Insights
1. Supporting a Major Sporting Event
Following the LED sports lighting upgrade, Huaxiyuan Sports Activity Center welcomed the volleyball and taekwondo competitions of the 15th Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Games with a professional, competition-ready lighting environment.
The upgraded system provided athletes with clear, uniform and low-glare lighting, allowing them to focus on performance without unnecessary visual distractions.
The Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture Women's Volleyball Team went on to achieve an outstanding result of two championships and one runner-up finish.
While lighting alone does not determine sporting performance, a professionally designed lighting environment provides an important foundation for athletes to train and compete at their best.
2. A Practical Demonstration of Professional Sports Lighting Technology
This project demonstrates SCL's core capabilities in professional sports lighting, including:
Stable Illuminance Performance
Maintaining a consistent lighting environment throughout training and competition.
Precision Optical Distribution
Directing light accurately toward the target area while minimizing unwanted light spill and glare.
Intelligent Lighting Control
Supporting flexible switching between different lighting scenarios to accommodate training, competition and other venue requirements.
Together, these technologies transform sports lighting from a basic illumination system into an integrated solution designed around athlete performance, broadcasting requirements and venue operation.
3. Industry Insight: Sports Lighting Is Essential Infrastructure for Modern Venues
The Huaxiyuan Sports Activity Center project demonstrates that professional sports lighting is far more than simply “making a venue brighter.”
A modern sports lighting system is an integrated engineering solution combining optical design, lighting standards, intelligent control and broadcasting requirements.
For venues hosting HD-TV or internationally oriented competitions, lighting requirements should be considered from the earliest stages of venue planning and system design—not addressed later through temporary upgrades or compromises.
With 18 years of dedicated experience in sports lighting, SCL continues to focus on the development of professional LED sports lighting solutions that help sports venues move beyond basic compliance toward higher performance, better visual quality and more reliable competition environments.
Lighting Is More Than Brightness
The right sports lighting does more than illuminate a venue. It supports performance, broadcasting, spectators and the overall experience of competition.
With professional LED sports lighting from SCL sports lighting, Kuytun—the Silk Road city in northern Xinjiang—is bringing the power and spirit of sport into the spotlight with a brighter, clearer and more professional competition environment.
